The 2014 Preakness has a female trainer, female jockey and filly in the same race for the first time.
This female trifecta consists of…
Linda Rice who is the trainer for Kid Cruz.
50-year-old Linda Rice has been in the horse racing business most her life and we’re happy to see her finally get a shot at a Triple Crown victory. Kid Cruz is a 20-1 long shot but according to Rice… “This horse deserves a shot. He likes to run long. He likes the dirt. He’s basically a closer”.
Rosie Napravnik who will be riding Bayern.
Napravnik finished third riding Mylute in last year’s Preakness. Perhaps 2014 will be her year when she mounts 10-1 Bayern a Bob Baffert trained colt. Pimlico is Napravnik’s home course and a win here would be extra special. “I would feel like – if I was able to ride the winner of the Preakness – that I was doing it for everybody who got me started in Maryland and who gave me the opportunities that led to Fair Grounds, Kentucky and Saratoga and having a horse in the Preakness”, said Rosie.
Filly Ria Antonia who will be ridden by Calvin Borel.
Ria Antonia will try to become the first filly to win the Preakness since Rachel Alexandra won in 2009. Ria Antonia did not run in the Kentucky but instead opted for the Kentucky Oaks where she finished sixth. She is a 30-1 shot here at the Preakness Stakes.
