Today the betting favorite was the winner as the 5-2 odds American Pharoah stormed past stablemate Dortmund and Firing Line to take the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby in front of a record crowd of 170,513.
American Pharoah is the aptly named bay colt of owner Ahmed Zayat the Egyptian turned American citizen.
Trainer Bob Baffert who had the 2 favorite horses in this race gets his fourth Kentucky Derby win. While jockey Victor Espinoza grabs his third derby win with two in the past two years.
There was not much to be surprised about in today’s race as the three leaders broke early from the crowded back. Dortmund held the early lead with Firing Line running second. Eventually after going wide in the final turn American Pharoah caught the leaders hung there for just a second then rallied past to win by a length.
