Twenty horses raced over a sloppy track at Churchill Downs for the 139th Kentucky Derby but only one had a little less mud on it than the others.
And it was Orb! Jockey Joel Rosario secured the first leg in the Triple Crown winning by 2 1/2 lengths after taking the lead with 200 yards to go.
The win was a victory for old school horse racing. Orb is trained by Shug McGauhghey who only brings horses to the Kentucky Derby when he is confident they are ready. And although the muddy track makes it hard to gauge just how good Orb really is, it would seem we have a legitimate Triple Crown contender in 2013.
